Diseases related to the thyroid are one of the common endocrine disorders worldwide. People of any age group can suffer from thyroid malfunction. Thyroid disorders are the conditions that affect the thyroid gland and its metabolic functions. The thyroid gland has important roles to play—it regulates numerous metabolic processes throughout the body. Many hormones are also regulated by it. There are two kinds of thyroid conditions—hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones. Its symptoms include tiredness, weight gain, intolerance to cold, dry skin, puffiness of the face, minimal sweating, depression, aches, and body pain.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much of the thyroxine hormone. This condition accelerates the body's metabolism, causing weight loss and an irregular heartbeat.

Ayurveda’s approach to thyroid

Tridoshas are the vital factors that keep the body functioning well when it is well balanced. Any imbalance in the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha will lead to a state of disease. As a result, it is important to bring the altered or imbalanced doshas to a homogenous state to treat various disease conditions.

According to Ayurveda, the thyroid is found in the 6th tissue level or Majjadhatu. Majja is controlled by Kapha dosha, and the thyroid function is controlled by Pitta dosha. Pitta is responsible for all the metabolic actions carried out by the thyroid gland.

Ayurveda believes that thyroid can be controlled by balancing the energies of the body and correcting the circulation of thyroxin hormone in the body.

When Vata dosha causes thyroid imbalance, one should not take a diet that increases Vata in the body. So you should consume foods that are rich in fiber like bananas, beans, and legumes.

To control weight gain caused by thyroid, it is recommended to take a Kapha pacifying diet like fresh vegetables and fruits, and wholesome foods like grains, beans, and nuts.

Besides these home remedies, Ayurveda suggests herbal-based medicines to control and manage thyroid disorders.
